This GRE book is about average. It doesn't do anything special. If you can find this cheap, get it. If not, buy something else.
It's a very good book for people taking the GRE exam. It's very objective, its strategies are good. But on the math section, there is only basic stuff (Kaplan's book on this specific subject is better). For GRE word lists, it's ok, though one should look for other lists to have a better vocabulary knowledge.
I read the Dummies book, but after taking practice tests (with the PowerPrep software from the ETS website), found myself not doing so well. I did the practice questions in the back, and memorized the vocab, in 3 days, and made close to a perfect score. I bought the Princeton Review book purely for its practice questions. The Princeton Review had great review questions in the back - extremely close to what the actual test is like. If you're one of those people who like to be over-prepared, GET THIS BOOK. The test will seem easy after you've studied with this book.
BE WARNED THAT THE ETS SOFTWARE (COMES FROM GRE COMPANY) DOES NOT WORK ON MACS. If you are rusty on math, or want high scores, I would strongly recommend Barrons Essential Words for the GRE (plus learning all the hit parade from PR) and Clif's Math Review for Standarized Tests. The online CATs are also quite useful, but easier than the actual gre. This book is definitely useful, but first you need to decide what score you actually want. Good Luck. If you can deal with mid range scores this book is adequate.
If you want scores over 600, or over 500 in verbal you NEED to give yourself time to drill the vocab.
This was an unpleasant surprise, so it was cool that you could do 5 online Cats through princeton review.
If you are a good writer, still review the Princeton essay section as their tips are very helpful for managing your time in this area.
The Hit Parade and tips for the essays are the strongest points of this book.
Watch out for the new format questions in both sections, not all the prep books are up to speed on these.
Their math review is helpful, but if you want a score higher than 600 in math you'll need more.
Some of the best advice in this book is how to manage your time per question, based on what score you want.
my prelim scores were 480 V, 420 M, final scores 630 V, 660 M.
Remember to plan on 6 - 8 weeks to learn all that vocab and get through that Clif's math book.
I could have bought a cheaper copy and be satisfied with it. I left about two or three messages to no avail and i have given up but I am not happy and not satisfied.
I could have bought a cheepaer one at a few cents but i chose this one becasuse it was supposed to have a DVD. I was so disappointed not to find one.
I received this book in good time but the description given in the advert indicated that the book was good new and that it had a DVD. Following advice from Amazon i decided to call him for further discussion and he would not answer.
Besides the book has a lot of writting all over and e ven in ink. I called Wachil right away and asked aboput the missing DVD and he simply said send it back.
I regret that I spent so much money- $13 and above for that book. I have bought many books from amazon and they are so new at very little and the descriptions are apt.Mary
